Maleficent Review

After the excitement we had already experienced on day 1 of D23’s Convention last August, I didn’t think they could top Idina Menzel’s performance of Let It Go. I was wrong. On Day 2 we got to go to the Let the Adventures Begin: Live Action at The Walt Disney Studios Panel. Having heard rumors of the film Maleficent, I was excited to see what they would preview. When the final logo came up on screen, the auditorium roared with excitement. Low and behold, Angelina Jolie was introduced and talked about making the film. They showed a version of the following clip and we were all left with our jaws dropped.

This scene is the pinnacle point and overall gem of the film.
Do not miss this part when you go see it.

Fast forward to this weekend. As we have seen lately, Disney has been taking classic fairy tales and modernizing them for the audiences of today. In a way, roles such as hero and villain are stripped from their stereotypical fairytale definitions and given a modern edge. Yes, we are still going to enjoy these films as they harken back to their animated legacy, but we will get much more from these films than ever expected. Maleficent will remain as the authoritative and powerful woman we have all grown to know and love, but slowly the film peels away the layers that we may not have experienced in the classic animated feature Sleeping Beauty.

The film begins by introducing Maleficent as a young fairy who befriends Stefan, a human boy who dreams of ascending to power when he’s older. After time passes, Stefan moves on from Maleficent to attain power while she becomes the most powerful fairy in the Kingdom of Moor. In order to take siege of an open opportunity to ascend to the throne, Stefan returns to Maleficent and betrays her.

Maleficent has beautiful cinematography. The camera lays out a gorgeous view of the fanciful kingdoms of both Malificent and Stefan. It also captures hidden details that true fans will rave about. The attention to detail can be seen in every scene. As Maleficent grows older and darker, the fabric and detailing in her clothes notate it.

The reinvention of this classic is ingenious and ties in perfectly with the animated feature. Maleficent is great for guests of all ages. Children will appreciate the humor and whimsical creatures that help make the film magical and timeless. It will also help teach them (and adults alike) that not everything can be changed with True Love’s Kiss.

FYI: Maleficent just grossed $70M at the box office opening weekend.
If that isn't a suggestion to go see it, I don't know what is!
